A research network focused on the critical connections between humans and the environment

The Critical Environments Research Group (CERG) is an interdisciplinary cohort of scholars working broadly in the area of Human-Environment interactions at the University of Manitoba. Since 2012, CERG has fostered a unique venue for collaboration and scholarly support around environmental issues in western Canada and beyond. Our mandate is to promote increased research and teaching collaborations that bring together critical scholarly perspectives on environmental sustainability, equity, and justice.

Research

Members of CERG work on projects across the globe that bring a critical lens to human-environment relationships.  Research in these areas contribute to our ability to understand and act on the entangled relationship between politics, culture, economics and the non-human world.

Network

At the heart of CERG is the networking of scholars at the University of Manitoba and beyond that focus on critical investigations of the Human-Environment relationship.  This network builds research projects, teaching collaborations and scholarly community more broadly.

Our Members

Scholars involved with CERG share the conviction that the environment cannot be understood as a stand alone category; instead our scholarship is oriented around the notion that the environment should be analysed as a set of relations, encompassing economic, social, political, cultural, legal and health frames.
